This four-volume encyclopedia of state-specific entries begins with a series of nine general essays about women in the United States, each six to eight pages long. On the first page of each state entry both a map and a small box of statistical information appear, including such data as the percent of women in the state legislature. A literary epigraph introduces a brief history (18 pages for New York State, for example), beginning with a description of the place of women among the state's original Native American settlers.
