Take the Mic

The Art of Performance Poetry, Slam, and the Spoken Word

By Smith, Marc K. & Kraynak, Joe

Publishers Summary:
A confidence-building guide for new and experienced slammers alike. Over the past 25 years, poetry slams have evolved from cutting-edge to a regular entertainment option for thousands. Every night of the week, in major cities across the USA and around the world, there's an open mic waiting for takers. For anyone who has ever enjoyed a slam or two and thought "I could do this," but felt apprehensive staring at that empty mic - or worse, climbed onstage and froze - Marc Smith, the founder of Slam Poetry, explains how to become a confident performer, from writing a powerful poem, to stage techniques, to going on tour. Take the Mic is filled with insider tips, backstage advice, and tons of examples of slam poems that wake an audience up. Readers can also link to the PoetrySpeaks.com community to listen to the samples, meet the poets and discover other inspirations for their next performance.

Verdict: These tool kits for creating events that foster creativity and community are a natural fit for all public libraries and useful for performers and event/community organizers. Background: These two books guide readers through the process of organizing and participating in poetry slams-poetry performance competitions. In Take the Mic, Smith, who is credited with starting slam poetry in Chicago in the mid-1980s, and freelance author Kraynak detail the fine points of performing poetry, including confronting stage fright, memorization, rehearsals, stance, and tips for getting and promoting gigs. Stage a Slam flows from the inkling of hosting a slam (considering motives, vision, resources, and support) to execution specifics (selecting and preparing venues, making guests comfortable, promotions, obstacles, and making money).
