Browning (history, Univ. of North Carolina, Chapel Hill) argues that while the Nazis' effort to find a Final Solution to their self-created Jewish Question was inherent in their ideology, we cannot understand Hitler's policy as a linear process from Mein Kampf to Auschwitz. Browning examines how Hitler's racial and political vision moved from a desire to create a "Jew-free" Germany toward mass slaughter throughout Nazi-dominated Europe.
