Field Day began as a theater company founded by Brian Friel and Stephen Rea in Derry in 1980 and evolved into a project seeking to contribute a solution to the conflict in Northern Ireland through the examination and critique of Irish cultural identity. The group's most ambitious publishing venture was the massive three-volume Field Day Anthology of Irish Writing, which presented over 1500 years' worth of historical, literary, political, and social writings about Ireland.
