Blame Nero Wolfe, Rex Stout's famous fictional detective, who cared fanatically for thousands of needy orchids. These new books seek to rescue orchids from their reputation as sensitive creatures, ready to drop dead at the faintest change in their environment. Each in its own way argues that orchids can be a hobby for anyone.Allikas, an orchid grower, photographer, and orchid webmaster, and Nash, accredited American Orchid Society judge, have coauthored several books on orchids (e.g., The World's Most Beautiful Orchids). This one provides plenty of information for orchid virgins, starting with a great orientation chapter, "What Is an Orchid?" Four chapters follow on growing requirements, tools, potting, and home growing conditions. A section on diseases gives the basic context of orchid problems, followed by a chapter on acquiring orchids. The final pages describe orchids seasonally, starting with winter. Allikas's fantastic photographs enliven the well-written text (although some sort of scale to convey actual plant and flower size would have been helpful).
