Probably the best encyclopedic treatment of country music since The Encyclopedia of Country Music (LJ 11/15/98), which was sponsored by the Country Music Association, this work provides a crash course on this genre from its embryonic stage in the 1920s (as an out-growth of folk music) up to and including what often passes for country music today (unremarkable musical pap, which has alienated many in the music's traditional fan base).
